Web design in Calgary
The Calgary market has a wide, dishonest middle: a $2,000 build and a $7,000 build are sold with identical words. Here is what actually differs between them.
Calgary has more web designers per capita than almost any Canadian city outside Toronto and Vancouver, which sounds like buyer's advantage and mostly is not. The abundance is at the bottom and the middle of the market, where the published ranges overlap so heavily that a $2,000 quote and a $7,000 quote arrive described in the same language - custom design, mobile-friendly, SEO-ready, built to convert. Almost every business here overpays or underbuys not because they chose badly but because the two quotes in front of them were genuinely indistinguishable on the information provided.
What the results page here actually looks like
The specific way this market misleads is page count, and it is measurable. The published Calgary figures put a full-service agency build at ten to twenty-five thousand dollars for four to five pages. The professional tier below it, at two to seven thousand, is where most service businesses land and where the range is widest and least honest - the difference between the ends of that band is almost never design quality, it is how many pages exist, whether anyone wrote the copy or the client was handed a blank document, and whether search was designed in from the start or bolted on after sign-off. A four-page site cannot cover the search surface a trade needs no matter how well it is designed, and this is the thing nobody puts in the proposal, because putting it in the proposal invites the question of why there are four pages.
What we would do here first
Fix the page count before discussing the design
Twelve pages is roughly the floor for a service business that needs to be found: home, the services split out individually, the markets served, proof, pricing, process, contact. Fewer than that and there is no surface for a search to land on. This is the decision that determines whether the site can ever work, and it is made before anyone opens a design tool.
Write the copy rather than requesting it
The most common failure in this market is a finished design waiting on a business owner to fill it, and a site that sits ninety per cent complete for five months. We write from an intake call and their own job notes, because the alternative reliably becomes the reason the build never launches.
Design against the quadrant reality
A Calgary business drawing work from one or two quadrants needs that legible on the page - the neighbourhoods named, the drive times honest, the service area matching what a crew genuinely covers. It is what separates a local site from a template that could belong to any city in Canada.
Ship in fourteen days and keep the URLs
Most rebuilds in this market quietly discard whatever ranking the old site had, because the URLs change and nobody maps them. Preserving or redirecting them one to one is unglamorous, takes an afternoon, and is the difference between launching level and launching behind.
Where this market has a ceiling
A website is not the constraint for every business, and we would rather say so than sell one. If your enquiries all arrive by referral, if your existing site already ranks and converts, or if the actual bottleneck is that nobody answers the phone at four in the afternoon, a rebuild changes nothing and you should spend the money elsewhere. The build is worth it when the site is genuinely failing to be found, or when there is no path from a visitor to an enquiry - which, in this market, is more often than not.
- What should a website cost in Calgary?
- The published market ranges put a professional small-business build between two and seven thousand dollars, and a full-service agency at ten to twenty-five thousand for four to five pages. We publish our own numbers rather than quoting by phone, and the full breakdown of what sits inside each tier is on the website cost guide.
- Why is the price range so wide for the same description?
- Because the description is the same and the scope is not. Page count, who writes the copy, whether photography is included and whether search was designed in before the layout was signed off account for nearly all of the difference. Ask any two quotes those four questions and the range stops looking arbitrary.
- Is fourteen days realistic for a real website?
- It is realistic for a productized build where the system already exists and only the content is new. It is not realistic for bespoke work with multiple stakeholder review rounds, and we do not pretend otherwise. What makes the fourteen days work is that the decisions are made in advance rather than discovered during the project.
- Will a rebuild lose the rankings we have?
- It will if nobody handles the URLs, which is the most common way a redesign goes backwards. Every existing address is preserved or redirected one to one, headings and structure carry across, and schema is rebuilt before launch rather than after. Done properly a rebuild launches level and climbs from there.
- Do you work with businesses outside Calgary?
- Yes - the build is identical wherever you are, and we run engagements across the Calgary and Edmonton regions and the corridor between them. What changes is the market analysis behind the location pages, which is why those are written per market rather than generated from a list.
