SEO in Vancouver, British Columbia

Most of Metro Vancouver is not Vancouver, and a business optimising for the city name competes hardest for the smallest share of the market it could serve.

The market

Vancouver is the market where the map lies to you most. The city proper holds a fraction of the population of the region it names, and the rest lives in Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, Coquitlam, North Vancouver and a dozen other municipalities that are separate cities with separate identities. A business that builds its search strategy around the word Vancouver is therefore competing for the most expensive term in the country's most expensive market, in order to reach the smallest share of the households it could actually serve.

What the results page here actually looks like

The geography compounds it in a way no other Canadian market replicates. This city is bounded by ocean, mountains and the agricultural land reserve, so it grew upward and eastward rather than outward, and the resulting density means proximity weighting in the map pack cuts extremely sharply - a profile downtown reaches far less of the Lower Mainland than the population figure suggests, because a searcher in Surrey is thirty kilometres and two bridge crossings away and is being served results weighted accordingly. Those crossings are themselves a competitive fact: drive time across a bridge at four in the afternoon bears no relationship to distance, and a service area drawn on kilometres rather than on the actual crossing describes a coverage nobody can deliver. Meanwhile the cost structure means competitors here can and do sustain spend that would be irrational in Alberta, so the head terms are held by businesses with real budgets rather than by whoever optimised most recently.

What we would do here first

  1. Choose the municipality before choosing anything else

Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, Coquitlam, North Vancouver. Establish which one your work actually comes from and win it outright before touching the metro term. A first-place position in one municipality is worth more traffic and far more revenue than a tenth-place position across the region.

  2. Draw the service area in crossings, not kilometres

The bridges and tunnels decide what a crew can reach, and they decide it differently at eight in the morning than at two in the afternoon. Measuring real crossing times and setting the area to what is genuinely serviceable is more honest and, in a market this dense, materially narrows what you should be claiming.

  3. Write for a market where the buyer researches harder

Higher ticket sizes and a more expensive city produce a buyer who compares more before contacting anyone. Detailed service pages, plain pricing signals and visible proof do more here than a page optimised to push a phone call, because the phone call happens after the comparison rather than instead of it.

  4. Treat neighbourhood identity inside the city as real

Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant, Yaletown, Commercial Drive, Dunbar. Within Vancouver proper these are how residents locate themselves and how they search, and the queries carry intent with almost none of the citywide competition attached to them.

Where this market has a ceiling

We are not local to this market and will say so on the page as well as here. We work Vancouver remotely from Calgary, which means the mechanics of local search we bring apply unchanged, and the things a genuinely local agency has - relationships, a physical presence, an instinct for which suburb is which - we do not. If proximity to your agency matters to you, hire a Lower Mainland firm. If what you need is the municipality-first structure described above executed properly, that travels. The other honest caution is cost: this is the most expensive market in Canada to hold a position in, and a budget calibrated to Alberta will underperform here rather than fail visibly, which is the harder problem to spot.

SEO in Vancouver: questions
Should I optimise for Vancouver or for my municipality?
Your municipality, almost always. Metro Vancouver is a group of separate cities and a searcher in Burnaby is served Burnaby-weighted results regardless of what your page targets. Winning one municipality outright produces more work than placing mid-table across the region.
Can an Alberta agency do useful work in Vancouver?
The structural work, yes - local search mechanics do not change at a provincial border, and municipality-first structuring is the same discipline regardless of which municipalities they are. What we cannot offer is a local presence or local relationships, and where those matter more than the structure, a Lower Mainland agency is the better hire.
Why is this market more expensive than Alberta?
Density and ticket size. More competitors per square kilometre chase the same searches, and higher-value jobs support marketing budgets that would not make sense in a smaller market, so holding a position costs more months of work. It should be budgeted for at the start rather than discovered when results lag.
Do neighbourhoods inside Vancouver need separate pages?
The well-known ones often justify it. Kitsilano, Mount Pleasant and Dunbar are how residents describe where they live and how they search, and those queries have real intent with far less competition than the city term. The test is whether you have something specific to say about working there.
